I knew the day would come and I probably could have guessed the child. My darling, six year old boy stole from a store for the first time yesterday. We were at babies r us getting a few things and I repeatedly told Andrew that he could not have a rice crispy treat from the check-out stand. Well, I got side tracked when I saw my neighbor coming out of Kiddie Kandids and while I chatted and wrapped up my purchase, the little bugger must have stuffed the treat into his pocket. When we got home, I unloaded the van and Jack says "hookie mommy"...that means "look mommy". Jack is standing there holding the shiny blue wrapper and I panicked. Where did that come from? Well, I knew where it came from and I turned to Andrew who already knew he was in trouble. I scolded him harder than i've ever scolded the kids before. After dinner, I made him get change from his piggy bank so that we could go back and pay for it. I made him apologize to the cashier and promise that he learned his lesson. When we got out to the car, he was really relieved that the police didn't show up to arrest him. Then we spent the car ride home talking about honesty, doing the right thing, and forgiveness. It was an unfortunate circumstance, but it turned out to be a great opportunity to talk to him about being truthful and God's amazing grace.

Oh man... I am dreading the day I have to do this... It almost happened yesterday at Target. Alli was buying a birthday present for a friend and she REALLY wanted a Littlest Pet Shop thing she found (not for her friend but for herself). She carried it around the store and didn't say a word when we got to the register. After I paid and we were ready to leave Justin reminded her that she still had it in her hand. She sure was mad that he noticed but she put it next to the candy and we left. Good job handling it with Andrew. I'm sure it will be a lesson he will never forget!
I'm so proud of you for the mommy and woman you've become! I can't imagine how embarrassed he was when he had to apologize to the cashier... :)
Wow, Beckie... you are such an awesome mommy! What a great way to turn a bad situation into a learning one. I bet he'll remember and appreciate your loving guidance for the rest of his life.
